We discussed 1963’s The Sadist while drinking Mischief from The Bruery. This is an Arch Hall Sr. Fairway International Picture. Jayson picked the movie as he’d purchased Weird Cinema: 15 Freaky Flicks (5 DVD set) awhile back and watched the movie.
Also, Joe Dante is a fan.
As the movie is titled “The Sadist”, we are linking out to a paper on the difference between a psychopath and a sadist: Understanding Psychopathic and Sadistic Minds by Maia Szalavitz
The film has some historic value as it is the first to be based on the killing Spree of Charles Starkweather. Badlands by Terrance Malik and Natural Born Killers by Oliver Stone were, also, based on this notorious serial killer.
Michael was pulled out of the movie by Arch Hall Jr.’s acting choices. The weird shuffling gait and the voice choices were odd. Also, Michael can do a spot on voice impersonation of Arch Hall Jr.'s character.
Arch Hall Jr. seems like a pretty decent guy. There are plenty of interviews you can find online. I recommend the interview with Tom Weaver in Earth vs. the Sci-Fi Filmmakers. Jefferson NC: McFarland & Co., 2005. ISBN 0786422106.
So, let's do some learning on some subjects that come up in the movie:
Michael wants everyone to check out Arch Hall Jr.'s goofy face around the 56 minute mark. He loves it.
In 1963, the Dodgers played the Reds at Dodger Stadium on April 24th and 25th. They won both games. Ron Fairly played with the Dodgers from 1958 to 1969. In 1963, the Dodgers won the National League pennant and the World Series.
We both recommend this movie as well the Mischief from The Bruery.
