One thing we agree on in this episode was Lots O' Peach Sour Brown Ale from New Glarus Brewing.
The Love-Ins (1967) is our journey into the 1960/1970 Hippie exploitation movies. These b-movies were generally about the hippie subculture and the associated music, drugs, clothes, and clash with the older generation.
The movie was produced by Sam Katzman, a renowned b-movie producer, and directed by Arthur Dreifuss. We both felt that these two men learned everything about the hippie culture by reading the headlines of the local Los Angeles newspaper. Seriously, the movie has every hippie cliché.
I did enjoy the music and only in the 1960s could you have a band called The Chocolate Watchband. Check out their official website. Below is a video of The Chocolate Watchband from another Hippie exploitation movie by Katzman and Dreifuss:
Also, the UFO's performed "Hello World" in the movie, which I dug:
The movie plot involves an underground newspaper, the rise of a cult leader, LSD, abortion, and assassination. Yeah, all of that in one movie. The most memorable part of the movie is the prolonged Alice in Wonderland acid trip scene in the middle of the movie that clocks in at close to six minutes. Cinematic gold.
Here's a link to a decent short BBC article on the relationship between Alice in Wonderland and drugs.
In terms of star power, there is James "book'em Danno" MacArthur, Mark "Major Don West" Goddard, and the wonderful Susan "Green Girl" Oliver.
Check out the great documentary on Susan Oliver:
And of course, Richard Todd playing Dr. Jonathan Barnett the Timothy Leary character in this movie.
Overall, I thought it was a bad movie with enough ridiculousness that I would watch again. Michael, however, felt the movie made him dumber and would not waste his time on it.
I found a interesting dissertation on the subject by Britton Stiles Rhuart for his Doctor of Philosophy.
