Ep. 4: Laserblast, with Raspberry Hibiscus Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout from New Holland

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

We’re talking 1978’s Laserblast, and drinking New Holland's Dragon's Milk Reserve - Raspberry Hibiscus Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout. Wait another Charles Band production! Also, look how fast we broke one of our guidelines from the first episode, Laserblast was covered by MST3k in 1996.

We did not know until researching this movie that both Kim Milford and Cheryl Smith had tragic deaths.

Jayson recalled how this was released less than a year after Star Wars. He’s pretty sure the only reason he saw this movie is that he thought Luke Skywalker was in it. Interestingly, both Mark Hamill and Kim Milford were in Corvette Summer.

If you want to see a great interview with Gianni Russo, who played secret agent man Tony Craig, check out VladTV YouTube channel. Excellent.

Michael does the best turtle alien sound impersonation. Jayson had a hard time keeping it together every time Michael did the sound. We did discuss David Allen the stop-motion animator behind these fantastic aliens. You couldn’t see it, but Jayson brought his Full Moon turtle alien figures he had purchased. We did agree that the two aliens did a pretty crappy job … whatever that may have been.

We did get on the subject of Billy’s wardrobe and his casual shirtlessness. Someone should consider a thesis paper on the decline of this wardrobe choice.

The pitch for this movie was probably Rebel Without a Cause meets Star Wars. Wouldn’t the movie have been slightly better if Billy, at the end, shouted “You’re tearing me apart” before being lasterblasted by the turtles? He could even have done the line like Tommy Wiseau.

Overall, the movie is a piece of work. We do recommend watching it just for nostalgia. And as Michael said, if you’re going to make a remake, focus on bad movies. Don’t remake good ones. This would be a perfect film to remake.

Jayson still goes on about Operation Sand Dust and wonders…Michael is still intrigued by Kim Milford’s interpretive dance movements while in Laserblast mode.

Thanks! And be careful as the Dragon’s Milk will ‘laserblast’ you.
